8 years later Cuban dissidents pick up EU prize

The European Parliament said members of Cuban opposition group Ladies in White had finally picked up the EU´s top human rights prize from 2005 in person, yesterday in Belgium.

Eight years after winning Europe´s top human rights prize, members of a Cuban opposition group on Tuesday finally picked it up after securing permission to travel abroad.

Cuba had denied the Ladies permission to travel receive the Sakharov award ever since they were honored eight years ago for their protests demanding the release of 75 loved ones jailed in a crackdown on dissidents. All 75 have since been released.

It had been a very moving moment which five representatives Cuba’s Ladies in White have heard with appreciation the words of the President of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, Martin Schulz and like many other Members that are in solidarity with their struggle.
