Safer Internet Day (SID) has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar. Starting as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and taken up by the Insafe network as one of its earliest actions in 2005, Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its traditional geographic zone and is now celebrated in more than 90 countries worldwide, and across six of the world’s seven continents.
From cyberbullying to social networking, each year Insafe aims to be at the forefront of emerging online issues and chooses a topic reflecting current concerns. For SID 2013 we focused on online rights and responsibilities, as we encouraged users to ´connect with respect´.
Internet Safe Day goes beyond the celebration of the event and has organiced a competition were children and young people, from any country, can participate by creating and submitting a short essay, a blog entry or a video blog describing their online achievement in English.
There are three categories of entry: under 9; 10-14, and over 15. Winners in each age category will receive a prize. Older winners (14+) will also have the chance to become an online safety ambassador for the Insafe network or attend the annual Safer Internet Summer School in Romania.
Deadline is 15 March 2013.
