Scottish Government wants to improve access to university for those from deprived backgrounds

A total of 87.9% of students in Scotland came from state schools, compared to the UK average of 88.9%.

Official statistics also show that nearly 9% of higher education students who went to a Scottish university in 2010/11 dropped out, compared to a UK average of 7.4%.

The Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP said: “This information confirms what the Scottish Conservatives have been saying for a long time – the current higher education set up in Scotland is actually counter-productive when admitting students from deprived backgrounds.
