The symposium has been prepared by two different studies, one from a multidisciplinary group of experts and the other by the European Group on Ethics. The Symposium will be attended by about 350 participants from industry, government, politics, science and civil society. The Symposium aims to discuss the benefits and limitations of nuclear fission for a low carbon economy with an open debate on all its aspects, taking into account the huge energy challenge which Europe is facing. Special emphasis will be given to research needs for a sustainable, secure, reliable and competitive energy mix, including nuclear fission. The goal is also to strengthen the links between science, civil society, industry and policy makers in order to keep a sustained focus on increased safety, risk-mitigation, safeguards and security.
